Windsurfing: Kuau Kanaha Wind Direction: ENE Wind Stength: Surf / Sea State: Air Temperature: Sea Temperature: Weather: Sunny spells Max Speed: Distance Covered:
Interesting day. After a long absence at last a big groundswell has hit the
islands but from the WNW. Questions marks therefore over how much of it
would reach Maui's north shore. And stupid mental strong
wind...again...getting annoying now.
We sailed Kuau first. The waves were good but it was too windy. On several
top turns my fully flattened 4.5 was simply ripped out of my hands. Canned
it after an hour and checked out Ho'okipa where the pros were out for a big
photoshoot, chopper and all. It was nice...but the wind would have made it
survival sailing at best. Solid logo with the occasional monster
mast-and-a-half set looked surprisingly do-able and if it wasn't for the
wind we would have given it a go.
Anyway...we eventually played it safe and tackled Kanaha. Correct decision.
Sailed a cross-off Lowers non-stop for 3 hours. Patience was required to
wait for the NW'ly groundswell sets to push in but when they did the whole
reef lit up with some of the cleanest and longest period waves I've seen at
Kanaha. Half-mast-ish on average with the occasional bigger one. If it
wasn't for the still mental wind it could have been seriously epic but more
rig-ripping-out-of-hands moments earns it *only* 4 stars.
A windsurfer knows that life is good when he starts praying for less wind
not more...
